Orthorexia is an unhealthy focus and obsession with proper or 'healthful' eating. Eating nutritious food is good, but if you have orthorexia, you obsess about it to the degree that can damage your overall well-being.


Some symptoms of orthorexia are:

  • Checking ingredients/ nutrition labels

  • Concern of health of ingredients

  • Cutting out entire food groups

  • Labeling foods as "healthy" and "pure"

  • Hours per day spent thinking of food

  • Distress over health of foods consumed

  • Obsession over following healthy lifestyle social media

  • Over-exercising

It is possible to recover. There are some tips and tricks that can help provide the support needed to maintain a healthy state of being and resist the temptations to relapse.
  • Admit there is a problem. You do not have to suffer alone. 

  • Begin therapy and create a multidisciplinary team including a HAES therapist, HAES nutritionist, and primary care HAES physician. 

  • Let go of the "good foods and bad foods" mindset

  • Make your meals delicious and fun! Try new recipes and restaurants with friends and family

  • Make gradual changes to your meals, and remember to not overly restrict yourself!

  • Join a support group, such as our Meal Support Group
