Can NJ Teachers Use Out-of-Network Benefits for Therapy?

When seeking mental health therapy, most people want to work with the licensed professional who is the best fit, but also affordable. As a private-pay practice, Recovered and Restored Eating Disorder Therapy Center encourages our clients to review their health plans for reimbursement benefits. Teachers and school employees in New Jersey who participate in the NJ Educators Health Plan may have out-of-network mental health benefits that reduce the overall cost of services.

The most common health insurance option for school employees, the NJ Educators Health Plan (NJEHP) offers strong coverage. Benefits vary by individual elections, so New Jersey educators and school staff who are exploring out-of-network mental health therapy should review their plan language.

Does the NJ Educators Health Plan Cover Out-of-Network Therapy?

Active employees in New Jersey public schools have access to the NJ Educators Health Plan, which offers comprehensive benefits for healthcare. Certain NJ teacher health insurance options provide private-pay therapy benefits. While out-of-pocket costs are lowest when working with an in-network provider, an out-of-network practice may be the best overall fit for an individual. For example, a New Jersey teacher who is looking for eating disorder therapy may not find an in-network practice that specializes in this area.

The good news is that working with an out-of-network therapy practice does not always mean that clients need to pay 100% of the costs on their own. Certain plans will reimburse individuals for a percentage of out-of-network therapy after their deductible and coinsurance amounts have been paid. Plans typically have a maximum annual benefit, which means that reimbursement may only be possible up to a certain dollar amount. New Jersey school employees who are enrolled in NJEHP should verify coverage before ruling out a private-pay therapy practice.

Reimbursement

How Does Out-of-Network Therapy Reimbursement Work for New Jersey Teachers?

Although the upfront cost of qualified mental health therapy is a financial investment, it is often worthwhile to work with a practice that specializes in an individual’s area of need.

Out-of-network reimbursement benefits help clients recoup some of the cost of therapy, which makes getting supportive and effective care far more affordable. For New Jersey teachers using NJEHP mental health benefits, reimbursement requires the following steps:

  1. Pay the therapist directly for their services

  2. The therapy practice will provide a superbill or other appropriate documentation

  3. Submit a claim on the NJ Educatory Health Plan provider’s website, and upload a copy of the supporting documentation

  4. The insurance company will process the claim and reimburse a percentage of the total cost based on the plan’s out-of-network benefits

Even though private-pay therapy practices do not accept insurance, they are typically familiar with the documentation their clients’ insurance providers need for out-of-network benefits. Recovered and Restored is happy to provide a superbill that helps our New Jersey therapy clients submit the right paperwork. A superbill includes our information, client information, diagnostic and procedure codes, proof of payment, and a record of when the services were received.

At Recovered and Restored, we are serious about protecting patient information. All documentation, such as a superbill, that contains Personally Identifiable Information and Protected Health Information is delivered to clients through a secure portal.

The amount a client is reimbursed for their therapy fees is determined by the individual plan. NJEHP mental health benefits have specific coverage amounts for in-network providers and out-of-network reimbursements. Reimbursement may be available after the plan’s deductible is reached, and there are annual maximum benefits available. New Jersey teachers should note that out-of-network benefits will not typically cover the full fee for therapy, but they do enhance affordability.

In Network

Do I Have to Choose an In-Network NJ Educators Health Plan Provider?

The NJ Educators Health Plan offers a directory of in-network providers that New Jersey teachers can use to find therapists. This does not mean, however, that individuals are restricted to only working with therapists who are in-network. The distinction between in-network and out-of-network simply shows users which practices accept their insurance plan.

When NJ teachers and school employees are looking for specialized care, going out-of-network for therapy may be the best overall choice. At Recovered and Restored, we are a team of compassionate therapists who specialize in eating disorders and other mental health needs that are often associated with eating disorders. Our New Jersey licensed therapists have expertise in this field and in the clinical approaches that are indicated for eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, trauma, and other factors that impact eating disorders. We also provide nutrition and meal coaching to support each client’s entire healing journey.

Although specialization is very important when it comes to therapy for eating disorders, finding the right fit is equally essential. For therapy to be effective, clients should feel comfortable and supported. This decision cannot be forced by a limited list of in-network providers. Fortunately, out-of-network benefits make it possible for New Jersey school employees to work with the therapist who is right for them.

How Can I Find Out What My NJ Teacher Insurance Will Reimburse?

All New Jersey school employees who are enrolled in the NJ Educators Health Plan are issued an insurance card that contains a customer service phone number. Call this number to ask specific questions about how out-of-network therapy reimbursement works. Many questions are also addressed on each NJ Health Plan provider’s website.

When speaking with an insurance representative, ask the following questions to find out your unique plan benefits:

  • Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?

  • What is my OON deductible?

  • How much of my deductible have I met?

  • What is my coinsurance after the deductible?

  • How does the plan determine the allowed amount?

  • Are CPT codes 90791, 90834, and 90837 covered out-of-network?

  • Do I need prior authorization?

  • How do I submit a superbill?

Take notes during the call, and contact potential therapy practices to review their policies for supporting out-of-network benefits. Therapists offer different levels of administrative assistance to clients who are working with NJEHP providers.
